Mariehamn, often called the world’s smallest metropolis, is the administrative center of Åland hosting the Parliament and Government and several official authorities. In the lush, small-scale town you also find the headquarters of the big, internationally known Åland companies, the hospital, the concert- and congresshall and many hotels, restaurants and shops.
But above all Mariehamn is the heart of the strong maritime heritage of Åland as well as of today's viable passenger shipping and lively leisure boat tourism.
On both sides of the narrow isthmus you find two harbours with the main port of the islands, two important marinas and the charming Maritime Quarters, home for traditional boats.
Here are also the world class Maritime Museum with Tall Ship Pommern, the Maritime Safety Center and the Government’s maritime education.
Therefore, it may not be particularly difficult to understand that Mariehamn has been chosen as one of the participating ports when the majestic Tall Ships Race
returns to the Baltic Sea in 2021.
Our town welcomes film productions, says Barbara Heinonen, Mayor in Mariehamn.
We are focused on helping producers as far as possible for example, by offering free parking arrangements in the City center.
